UK Covid LIVE: Masks will become personal choice, says minister, as government says ‘compelling’ health argument for easing lockdown

Mask wearing is likely to be left to personal choice after the final stage of the road map ends on July 19, Cabinet Minister Robert Jenrick has said.

Mr Jenrick told Sky News that “like many people, I want to get away from these restrictions as quickly as I possibly can”.

“I think we are going to now move into a period where there won’t be legal restrictions, the state won’t be telling you what to do, but you will want to exercise a degree of personal responsibility and judgment - different people will come to different conclusions on things like masks.”

It come as Health Secretary Sajid Javid said there are “compelling” health reasons why the Covid restrictions should drop on July 19.

Writing in the Mail on Sunday, Mr Javid said: “The economic arguments for opening up are well known, but for me, the health arguments are equally compelling. Rules that we have had to put in place have caused a shocking rise in domestic violence and a terrible impact on so many people’s mental health,” he added.
