UK Covid LIVE: Care home visits must be underpinned by law as over-50s to be offered third vaccine by winter

The right of care home residents to have visits from loved ones must be “underpinned” by law, a new report by cross-party MPs has said.

It was “unacceptable” that some care home providers had argued it was not safe to follow government guidance to allow care home residents in England to have visitors as lockdown has eased, the Joint Committee on Human Rights found.

It comes as all over-50s could be offered a third vaccine before winter in an attempt to eradicate the threat from coronavirus entirely by Christmas, The Times reported.

Trials are underway to determine whether to give a tweaked vaccine for variants or a third dose of the vaccines already in circulation in the UK.
