UK Covid infection spike: Highest rates all in Scotland but 73% down - see full list

By Ian Jones

Covid rates have fallen in nearly three-quarters of all local areas across the UK, statistics show.

Of the 377 regions in the nation, 274 have seen a drop in the seven days up to September 11 - a total of 73 per cent.

Comparatively, 103 areas - or 27 per cent - have seen an increase.

Data compiled by the PA news agency shows that the regions with the highest rates are currently all in Scotland.

West Dunbartonshire tops the list, with 1,022 cases - the equivalent of 1,156.9 per 100,000 people.

This is down slightly from 1,212.4 in the seven days to September 4.

East Renfrewshire has the second highest rate, down from 1,073.3 to 998.3, with 959 new cases.

And Inverclyde comes in at third place, down from 1230.2 to 949.9, with 732 new cases.

Figures show that Fermanagh & Omagh has the highest rate in Northern Ireland (732.1), Neath Port Talbot has the highest rate in Wales (698.8) and Corby in Northamptonshire has the highest rate in England (676.2).

The five UK areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:

  • Orkney Islands (up from 84.8 to 250.0)
  • Lisburn & Castlereagh (496.4 to 631.6)
  • North West Leicestershire (469.4 to 592.5)
  • Blaenau Gwent (419.9 to 531.3)
  • Hinckley & Bosworth (448.7 to 559.5)

The latest statistics come the day after Health Secretary Sajid Javid unveiled the Government's winter tactics to battle Covid.

The plan is split into A and B - with the latter slated to only be used if the pressure on the NHS comes "unsustainable".

As part of the plan A for autumn and winter:

- A booster vaccination campaign will begin next week for millions of people who received jabs in phase one of the rollout.

- Mr Javid said it is "highly likely" that frontline NHS staff and those in wider social care settings will need to have Covid-19 and flu vaccinations in order to be deployed, measures which are currently subject to consultation.

- People will be encouraged to meet outdoors or open windows if indoors, wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed settings, wash their hands frequently, and use the NHS Covid-19 app.

- Businesses are urged to consider using the Covid pass to check the vaccination or test status of customers.

Mr Javid told MPs: "The plan shows how we'll give this nation the best possible chance of living with Covid without the need for stringent social and economic restrictions."

But he added: "We have seen how quickly this virus can adapt and change so we have prepared a Plan B of contingency measures that we can call upon only if they are needed and supported by the data to prevent unsustainable pressure on the NHS."

Those measures could include:

- Communicating clearly and urgently to the public that the level of risk has increased, and with it the need to behave more cautiously.

- Introducing mandatory vaccine-only Covid-pass use in settings including nightclubs; indoor venues with 500 or more attendees likely to be in close proximity to others, such as music concerts; outdoor settings with 4,000 or more people, such as festivals; and any settings with 10,000 or more people, such as sports events.

- A legal requirement to wear face coverings in some settings.

- Advice to work from home.
