UK Covid hospital deaths drop by 60% in two weeks

The daily number of Covid-19 deaths recorded in UK hospitals has plummeted by 60% in two weeks.

A further 97 covid deaths have been recorded in UK hospitals in the past 24 hours.

In England there were 77 deaths in hospitals reported today, eight in Wales and 12 in Scotland, while Northern Ireland did not provide any figures today.

Today's figures are low in comparison to Wednesdays in previous weeks.

A week ago the figure was 179, while a fortnight ago it was 255, 364 three weeks ago and 622 a month ago.

In all settings, 125,690 people have now lost their lives within 28 days of catching the virus in the UK.

In more positive news, almost 25 million people have now had a first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

Now all over-50s can now book their coronavirus jab via the NHS website as the rollout begins moving on to younger age groups.

The NHS has updated its website to allow all over-50s to book online - up until today it had being allowing over-55s only to schedule their own appointments.

The speed is expected to ramp up from today in a rapid expansion drive as vaccine dose stocks increase.

Boris Johnson has set the target of vaccinating all UK adults by the end of July, but it is hoped the target could be met even sooner in one step towards securing Britain's route out of lockdown.
