UK Covid hospital daily deaths up by 202 in huge 70 per cent reduction in one month

The UK's coronavirus hospital death toll has increased by 202 - a decline of 70% from the total exactly a month ago.

England reported 159 new fatalities, Scotland had 22, Wales recorded 12 and Northern Ireland had nine.

By comparison, the tolls announced on recent Thursdays were 221 on March 4, 311 on February 25, 386 on February 18 and 662 on February 11.

The record number of hospital deaths announced in a single day was 1,185 on January 20, while Britain was in the peak of its second wave of the crisis, which the World Health Organisation declared a pandemic a year ago today.

It is thought that Britain could have a stockpile of up to 10 million doses of Covid-10 vaccines, raising hopes over-30s could be offered their jabs by April.

Positive coronavirus tests in England have dropped by a third in a week to their lowest levels since September, according to new Test and Trace figures.

Here is a look at the situation in each UK nation on Thursday.

England

NHS England reported a further 159 deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities in NHS hospitals to 84,935.

Covid-19 case rates are continuing to fall in all regions of England, according to the latest weekly surveillance report from Public Health England.

The number of people in England waiting to start hospital treatment has risen to a new record high.

Figures from NHS England show 4.59 million people were waiting to start treatment at the end of January - the highest number since records began in August 2007.

Scotland

Scotland has recorded 22 deaths from coronavirus and 591 positive tests in the past 24 hours, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said.

It brings the death toll under this measure - of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - to 7,483.

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, Ms Sturgeon said 207,747 people have now tested positive in Scotland, up from 207,156 the previous day.

The daily test positivity rate is 2.5%, down from 3.1% the previous day.

There are 556 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, down 26 in 24 hours, and 42 patients are in intensive care, down seven.

Ms Sturgeon said 1,825,800 people have received their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine, up 16,642 from yesterday, and 141,433 have received their second dose.

Progress in the fight against Covid-19 has meant the next phase of opening schools and changes to outdoor mixing will go ahead, she said.

All primary school pupils and more secondary pupils will be back in school from Monday.

Changes to current rules will allow four people from two households to mix outdoors from Friday.

Wales

There have been a further 195 cases of coronavirus in Wales, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 205,788.

Public Health Wales reported 12 further deaths, taking the total in the country since the start of the pandemic to 5,424.

It said a total of 1,034,141 first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine had now been given in Wales, an increase of 14,931 from the previous day.

The agency said 221,902 second doses had also been given, an increase of 15,508.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland's Department of Health reported nine new deaths.

It brings the total to 2,096.
