The weekly number of coronavirus deaths in England and Wales has climbed to its highest level since the end of March, new figures show.
A total of 404 deaths registered in the week ending July 30 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
This is up 24 per cent on the previous week and is the highest number since 719 deaths were registered in the week to March 26.
Deaths increased in seven of England's nine regions, with the biggest rise in Yorkshire and the Humber, where there were 30 more fatalities compared with the previous week.

Here is a breakdown by region:
- North East: 46 deaths in the week ending July 30 (previous week’s total was 24)
- North West: 93 (97)
- Yorkshire and the Humber: 65 (35)
- East Midlands: 23 (18)
- West Midlands: 38 (36)
- East: 25 (21)
- London: 50 (35)
- South East: 25 (29)
- South West: 24 (13)
- Wales: 13 (16)
The latest figures reflect the impact of the third wave of Covid-19, which began in the UK in May and led to a sharp increase in the number of new cases of coronavirus as well as a smaller rise in hospital patients.
The number of new cases has fallen in recent weeks but this is yet to be reflected in the data for deaths, due to the length of time between someone getting Covid-19, becoming seriously ill and then dying.

Deaths dipped as low as 84 in the week to June 11.
While the number of deaths in the latest week is the highest for four months, it is still well below the level seen at the peak of the second wave.
Some 8,433 deaths involving Covid-19 were registered in England and Wales in the week to January 29.
There were 10,135 deaths in England and Wales registered in the week ending July 30, 12% above the pre-pandemic five-year average, the ONS said.
Some 49 care home resident deaths involving Covid-19 in England and Wales were registered in the week to July 30, up from 35 deaths in the previous week.
In total, 42,698 care home residents in England and Wales have had Covid-19 recorded on their death certificate since the pandemic began.
The ONS figures cover deaths of care home residents in all settings, not just in care homes.
A total of 155,667 deaths have now occurred in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, the ONS said.
The highest number of deaths to occur on a single day was 1,484 on January 19.
During the first wave of the virus, the daily toll peaked at 1,461 deaths on April 8 2020.
What is the infection rate in my local area?
Separate figures show that 153 (49 per cent) of the 315 local areas in England have seen a week-on-week rise in rates, 159 (50 per cent) have seen a fall and three are unchanged.
Lincoln continues to have the highest rate, with 649 new cases in the seven days to August 5 – the equivalent of 653.6 per 100,000 people.
This is unchanged from the seven days to July 29.
Exeter has the second highest rate, up from 503.0 to 590.5, with 776 new cases.

Hull has the third highest rate, up from 503.1 to 558.2, with 1,450 new cases.
The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:
- Peterborough (up from 287.7 to 428.7)
- Hinckley & Bosworth (259.0 to 381.0)
- Brighton & Hove (367.2 to 480.6)
- Cambridge (306.9 to 416.7)
- Torbay (396.3 to 496.1)
The list has been calculated based on Public Health England data published on August 9 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.
The figures, for the seven days to August 5, are based on the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in either a lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test, by specimen date.
The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.
Data for the most recent four days (August 6-9) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.
