Boris Johnson has said the nation must immediately avoid all "non-essential travel and contact" and move to whole household isolation in the fight against coronavirus.
It comes as the death toll from coronavirus in the UK hit 55 on Monday.
Shortly after the Prime Minister ramped up social distancing measures, top experts warned that the outbreak could still lead to some 250,000 deaths in the UK.
The PM said groups particularly vulnerable to Covid-19 - those aged over 70 and those with pre-existing health condition - will be asked to stay at home "for around 12 weeks" by the weekend.
He also called for household isolation, meaning people should self-isolate for 14 days if they live with anyone who has any symptoms - a high temperature or a new cough.
