Grant Shapps has told Brits not to leave home without a face mask as new laws come into effect this weekend.
The Transport Secretary on Wednesday made the last-minute bid to end confusion with mandatory face coverings for shoppers from Friday. He told Sky News: “If all you bear in mind is that from this weekend you need to be carrying a face covering, you can’t go wrong.”
It comes as Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick said she hopes shoppers who refuse to wear masks will be “shamed” into wearing face coverings. She told LBC that calling the police over someone failing to wear a face covering should only be “a last resort”.
Meanwhile the number of coronavirus-related deaths in UK hospitals increased by 11 on Wednesday.
