The Government has urged Britain to "play their part" in curbing the reproductive rate of coronavirus after new figures suggested it had crept up.
The R value - which is the average number of people that will contract Covid-19 from an infected person - is now between 0.7 and 1.0 in the UK, according to Number 10's scientific advisors. It was previously between 0.5 and 0.9.
Meanwhile, the row over reopening England's schools has intensified, with one leader of a teachers' union describing the scientific evidence behind the Government's plan to start reopening schools on June 1 as "flimsy".
It came as the chairman of the British Medical Association has also waded into the debate, saying ministers should not consider reopening schools until the case numbers are "much lower".
