UK coronavirus LIVE: Millions of essential workers eligible for Covid-19 tests as hospital deaths near 19,000

The Government have said it is working on the infrastructure for "large-scale" contact tracing as a key strategy for lifting the coronavirus lockdown.

Speaking at the daily Covid-19 press conference, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the adoption of “test, track and trace” could enable the “heavier” social-distancing measures to be eased.

He also said all essential workers who need a Covid-19 test will now be eligible to get them, with capacity for screenings having been ramped up.

It comes as almost 19,000 coronavirus patients have now died in UK hospitals – up by 638 from 18,100 the day before.
