
The UK has seen a record rise in the number of daily coronavirus cases, with 6,634 new infections recorded in the past 24 hours.
Public Health England medical director Yvonne Doyle said the figures were a "stark warning" following fresh restrictions, including encouraging people to work from home and a curfew on hospitality venues.
It came as Rishi Sunak unveiled his plans to protect millions of jobs in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis. The Chancellor revealed details of a new job support scheme, which will see the Government “directly support” the wages of people in viable jobs working at least a third of their normal hours.
Meanwhile, four more countries - Denmark, Slovakia, Iceland and the Caribbean island of Curacao - were added to the list of countries from where British travellers must self-isolate for 14 days on their return.
