The NHS Test and Trace system was unable to reach almost a third of people who tested positive for coronavirus last week while the UK death toll has passed 43,000, new figures have revealed.
Contact tracers only spoke to 4,869 out of 6,923 people who were transferred to the system after testing positive between June 11 to 17, meaning 29.7 per cent were not reached, Department of Health data revealed on Wednesday.
In other news, Downing Street has confirmed that new laws will be introduced to allow drinking in streets, car parks and outdoor spaces to help the UK's lockdown recovery. Meanwhile, singing and chanting in places of worship will not be allowed when they reopen their doors on July 4.
It comes as the number of people who tested positive for Covid-19 across all settings in the UK has risen by 149, bringing the total to 43,081, according to Government figures.
