The Government has pledged a further £84 million in the search for a coronavirus vaccine as the UK's death toll figure rose by 170 - the lowest amount since the day after lockdown began.
Speaking at the daily Covid-19 press conference at Downing Street, Business Secretary Alok Sharma announced a ground-breaking deal with pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca, which aims to make 30 million vaccine doses available as early as September if trials are successful.
It comes after Boris Johnson reportedly told Tory MPs he hopes the UK can return to “near-normality” in July while restaurants and cafes could turn outdoor seating areas into stalls to serve customers within weeks, according to Government plans reported by the Sunday Telegraph.
Meanwhile, the UK death toll rose by 170 on Sunday - the lowest since since 24 March, when 149 deaths were reported - bringing the total number of fatalities to 34,635.
