Coronavirus LIVE: Ministers face renewed pressure over easing lockdown as global death toll hits 300,000

Ministers are facing renewed pressure to push back their plans to ease parts of the lockdown to return the country back to a sense of normality.

Leaders of local authorities and unions chiefs have accused ministers of going too fast on its plans to reopen schools and want more local control over their return.

Labour has taken aim at the Government's track-and-trace plans, warning ministers its crack team of contact tracers should be close to three times the size of the operation currently being installed.

It comes as the global coronavirus death toll passed the grim milestone of 300,000, according to researchers at John Hopkins University.

The UK remains among the worst-hit countries for Covid-19, with the official UK death toll rising by another 428 to 33,614.
