Coronavirus LIVE: World sees highest daily rise in cases as deaths near five million

The world has seen the highest daily rise in coronavirus cases, the World Health Organisation’s chief has confirmed.

Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned Wednesday that the coronavirus pandemic is a long way from being over.

He said 106,000 new cases had been reported to the WHO in the last 24 hours, as the total number of cases approach five million.

It comes as a further 235 people died in UK hospitals after contracting coronavirus, bringing the total death toll to 35,576.
