UK coronavirus LIVE: Matt Hancock defends decision to abandon NHS Test and Trace app as death toll jumps by 135

Matt Hancock defended the decision to abandon the NHSX app in favour of joining forces with the Apple and Google project.

At the Downing Street press conference, the Health Secretary said testing on the Isle of Wight uncovered a “technical barrier” before adding that he was unable to provide a future date for the app's release.

It comes after the Government hailed its NHS test and Trace programme for starting to make a difference, as it emerged that almost 90,000 people were told to self-isolate in its first two weeks.

Meanwhile, the coronavirus death toll in UK hospitals has increased by 135, with a 13-day-old baby the youngest victim to be confirmed in the last 24 hours.
