UK coronavirus LIVE: Face masks made mandatory for secondary schools in local lockdown areas as UK death toll rises by 12

Secondary school pupils must wear face coverings in school corridors in local lockdown areas of England, Boris Johnson has announced.

The U-turn came on Tuesday night after the Prime Minister said the Government would "look at changing medical evidence". Students wearing face coverings outside lockdown areas will be at the discretion of secondary schools across the country.

But Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said the Government is not recommending that face coverings should be made compulsory across the country in all schools.

It comes as the death toll in the UK rose by 12. Scotland recorded two new deaths - the first newly registered deaths since July 16. Nine further deaths were recorded in England, along with one in Wales. No new deaths were recorded in Northern Ireland.
