Boris Johnson urged the British public not to be “carried away by over-optimism” following the UK approval of the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine.

At a Downing Street press conference, the Prime Minister welcomed the imminent rollout of the jab, and hailed the “biological ju jitsu” of its creators.

But he acknowledged there were “immense logistical challenges” in distributing the jab, adding: “It will inevitably take some months before all the most vulnerable are protected – long, cold months.”

On Wednesday the UK became first country in the world to approve the jab, paving the way for inoculations to begin next week. Studies show it is 95 per cent effective.

It came as Londoners returned to shops, gyms and lidos as they reopened under new Tier 2 restrictions.
