Home Secretary Priti Patel described the coronavirus death toll in UK hospitals passing 20,000 as a “deeply tragic and moving moment” and warned that “we are not out of the woods yet”.

The Home Secretary also used the daily press briefing at Downing Street to warn criminals that "our outstanding police and law enforcement agencies are absolutely on to you".

On Saturday, the confirmed death toll in the UK rose to more than 20,000, with the Department of Health announcing that a further 813 patients have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus.

Meanwhile a row is growing after chief adviser Dominic Cummings took part in meetings of the senior scientists advising the Government on the coronavirus outbreak.
