
The latest UK figures show 376 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Friday, bringing the UK total of to 51,304.
The Government said that, as of 9am on Friday, there had also been a further 27,301 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.
It represents a dramatic fall from yesterday’s record announcement of 33,470 coronavirus cases coupled with 563 deaths.
It comes as London has seen a record high in new coronavirus cases, with nearly 4,000 infections reported in one day, according to latest figures.
A total of 3,929 cases were reported in the capital on Thursday, with the average across the city hitting a peak of 158.5 cases per 100,000 population for the last seven days.
The statistics reveal hotspots in east London boroughs such as Havering and Newham, but much lower rates in areas such as Kensington and Chelsea and Lewisham. One expert said the increase probably corresponded with rising infection rates at the start of the month and showed why the second national lockdown was required.
It came as Transport Secretary Grant Shapps raised hopes for millions of Britons by suggesting they may be able to fly abroad for a foreign holiday at Christmas.
