UK coronavirus LIVE: Boris Johnson tells nation 'you must stay at home' as virus cases surge to 6,650 and death toll up by 55

Boris Johnson has told the British people they must stay at home as coronavirus cases surge in the UK.

In a televised address, the PM said people will now only be allowed to leave their home for very limited purposes and that police will have the power to help to enforce the latest restrictions.

"From this evening I must give the British people a very simple instruction - you must stay at home," he said. "Because the critical thing we must do is stop the disease spreading between households."

The UK's confirmed infection count shot up to 6,650 on Monday, an increase of almost 1,000, and the death toll hit 336.
