UK coronavirus LIVE: Dominic Cummings insists he won't resign as Boris Johnson and ministers back adviser over lockdown 'breach'

Boris Johnson's chief adviser has said he "obviously" won't resign amid claims he breached the Government's own coronavirus restrictions by travelling to Durham during lockdown .

Dominic Cummings said he acted "reasonably and legally" when he travelled more than 260 miles from his London home, despite travel restrictions being in place. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is among the high-profile minister to have backed the PM's top aide , while Number 10 has also insisted he was acting within the Covid-19 guidelines because he feared for the welfare of his child.

Asked if he would consider his position, he said he would not. It came as the former police chief in Durham told the Guardian: “It’s obvious to anyone this breaks the rules. So it should be especially clear to the people who created them.”

Meanwhile, authorities managing beaches and beauty spots are bracing for a heavy haul of visitors expected to put social distancing rules under strain on another warm Bank Holiday weekend, while the official UK coronavirus death toll has passed 36,500 .
