Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced that shielding will stop at the end of July as the Covid-19 daily death rate continues to fall.

It came as latest daily figure for people dying after testing positive in the UK had fallen to 15 – the lowest since mid-March.

Mr Hancock added that the daily number of people testing positive for coronavirus has fallen to below 1,000 for the first time since the peak of the epidemic.

Boris Johnson and his Cabinet ministers will discuss loosening the two-metre social distancing rule and thrash out the next steps out of lockdown with chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance and chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty, before outlining the new measures to Parliament tomorrow.
