UK coronavirus LIVE: True death toll passes 51,000 as shops to open from Monday while schools remain shut

The number of deaths involving coronavirus in the UK has now passed 51,000, according to the latest available data.

Office for National Statistics figures released today reveal that 51,089 deaths have been registered across the country so far where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate. It comes as the country's official death toll jumped by 286 overnight to 40,883 - this is despite just 55 fatalities being recorded the day before.

In other developments, Business Secretary Alok Sharma announced that shops will be allowed to open from Monday provided they comply with "Covid secure" guidelines, as the Government attempts to kickstart the economy as lockdown eases.

However, earlier today Gavin Williamson admitted that primary schools in England will now not be able to welcome all pupils back before the summer holidays . The Education Secretary said the Government was working towards getting all children back in the classroom in September.
