Boris Johnson has insisted that it is safe for people in the UK to have the Oxford/AstraZenecavaccine after a string of countries suspended use of the jab over fears of possible side effects.

France, Italy and Germany have joined Ireland, DenmarkNorway and Iceland in pausing giving out the vaccine after the national regulator advised that reports of blood clots should be investigated. AstraZeneca has insisted that its inoculation is safe.

Asked directly if he could tell the public that the vaccine is safe, the Prime Minister said: “Yes, I can. In the MHRA we have one of the toughest and most experienced regulators in the world. They see no reason at all to discontinue the vaccination programme.”

It came as some Covid lockdown restrictions were eased in Wales, with hairdressers and barbers reopening for appointments for the first time in 2021.
