UK coronavirus hospital deaths rise to 33,212 after 23 more fatalities reported

The UK's coronavirus hospital death toll has increased to 33,212 after 23 more fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours.

England reported 19 new deaths, Wales had three, Northern Ireland recorded one and Scotland reported no new deaths for the fourth consecutive day.

The number of deaths announced on Mondays is usually lower due to a lag in reporting fatalities over the weekend.

The latest increase is the second lowest total announced on a Monday in lockdown after 21 fatalities were reported on June 22.

In the weeks before that, 32 deaths were announced on June 15, 62 on June 8, 115 on June 1 and 77 on May 25. The highest increase on a Monday was 697 on April 13 when the UK was in the peak of its outbreak.

The Government's official toll of 43,550 in all settings, including care homes, will be updated later.

A further 19 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 28,672, NHS England said.

Patients were aged between 60 and 96 years old. All had known underlying health conditions.

Public Health Wales said a further three people had died after testing positive for Covid-19, taking the total number of deaths to 1,507, while the total number of cases increased by 116 to 15,717.

Northern Ireland reported one additional death, taking its total to 551.

There have been no deaths registered of people who tested positive for Covid-19 in Scotland for a fourth consecutive day, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced.

Speaking at the Scottish Government's coronavirus briefing, she said the latest figures showed no new deaths within the previous 24 hours.

The total number of people who have died under the measurement remains at 2,482.

Ms Sturgeon said five more people tested positive for the virus since Sunday, taking the total to 18,241.

A total of 740 patients were in Scottish hospitals with confirmed or suspected Covid-19, down 38 in 24 hours.

Of these, 10 were intensive care, a fall of three.

Ms Sturgeon said: "This is the fourth day in a row when no deaths of patients confirmed through a test have been recorded in Scotland.

"Now, of course, two of these days have been weekends and we know that registration can be artificially low at weekends, and we may see more deaths registered later this week.

"But there's no doubt that these recent figures demonstrate beyond any doubt how much progress Scotland has made in tackling Covid and that is down to the efforts and sacrifices of everyone across the country.

"I want again to say a heartfelt thank you to all of you for that."

Meanwhile, Downing Street has rejected concerns about the easing of England's lockdown - including the reopening of pubs - taking place on a Saturday.

The Prime Minister's spokesman said: "We are trusting the public to comply with the new social distancing rules.

"Businesses will only be able to reopen if they follow the Covid secure guidelines.

"Police obviously have a range of existing powers which they can use should it be necessary."

The July 4 date had been "very clearly signposted" in the coronavirus road map published in May, the spokesman added.
