UK coronavirus hospital deaths rise by lowest total in seven weeks

The number of new coronavirus deaths in UK hospitals has risen by its lowest total in seven weeks.

A further 223 deaths have been registered by hospitals across the country in the latest daily update.

England reported 204 new deaths, Scotland had five and Wales recorded 14, taking the UK's total to 24,338 as it entered the seventh week of the lockdown. Northern Ireland has not yet reported its latest totals.

The UK currently has the third highest death toll in the world behind the US and Italy - but is expected to move past Italy to become Europe's worst hit country.

Today's news will provide hope that the deaths curve is continuing to flatten.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to outline the full details of how the UK will move out of the lockdown on Sunday.

The government has been in talks with businesses and unions about how restrictions can start to be safely lifted in a way that avoids a hugely damaging second peak of Covid-19.

On Sunday, Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove said some social distancing measures would remain in place until a vaccine has been developed but added that the government would seek to restore people's lives to "as close to normal as possible".

World leaders are to meet today in a virtual summit to go over plans to unite and discover a vaccine.
