UK coronavirus hospital deaths rise by 7 - with none in Scotland for 25th day running

The coronavirus death toll in the UK's hospitals has increased by seven to a total of 34,044.

NHS England has reported six new deaths today, while Northern Ireland announcing one and Wales and Scotland had none.

There have now been no deaths in Scotland for 25 days in a row.

The seven new fatalities today is higher than last Monday's increase, when five deaths were recorded.

It comes as Boris Johnson insisted it is the 'right thing' to get children back into classrooms in September.

The Prime Minister's spokesman said pubs and restaurants may have to shut to keep schools open in local lockdowns.

Yesterday the number of new cases in the UK rose back above 1,000 for the first time since June, following rising transmission rates in the north of England.

However, coronavirus deaths in hospitals have collapsed from 866 people a day on April 10 at the height of the pandemic to just five on Thursday August 5 last week, the latest data from NHS England shows.

Hospital staff in England were dealing with around 17,000 coronavirus patients a day in mid-April.

But as of last week, the data shows medics were treating just 700 patients for Covid-19 — a dramatic fall of 96%.

The Government has also signalled it is ready to take countries such as France off its air bridge list amid spiking infections in Europe.

Mr Johnson said: “I don’t want to advise people about their individual holidays, individual decisions, they should look at the travel advice from the Foreign Office clearly.

“But what I will say, and I hope people would expect us to do this, in the context of a global pandemic, we’ve got to keep looking at the data in all the countries to which British people want to travel.

“Where it is necessary to impose restrictions or to impose a quarantine system, we will not hesitate to do so.

“It’s been a huge effort for the entire population of this country to get the disease down to the levels that we are currently seeing, but we do not want reinfection and that’s why we’ve got to keep a very, very close eye on the data in destinations around the world.”
