UK coronavirus hospital deaths increase by 15 to total of 33,986 across country

The UK's hospital death toll from coronavirus has risen by 15 in the past 24 hours.

It's a smaller increase than last Wednesday when 19 hospital deaths were recorded.

The total now stands at 33,986 people who are recorded to have died in a hospital setting from Covid-19.

There were 13 deaths in hospitals in England, none in Scotland or Northern Ireland and two were recorded in Wales in the last 24 hours.

The figures come out as a second local lockdown is put in place - this time in Aberdeen after a cluster of at least 54 cases linked the Hawthorn Bar.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the rise in cases heightens fears the Scottish Government is "dealing with a significant outbreak in Aberdeen that may include some community transmission".

A five-mile travel rule has been put in place and residents are being told not to enter each other's houses.

All indoor and outdoor hospitality venues have been told to close by 5pm on Wednesday.

The measures, which apply to the Aberdeen City area, will be backed by government regulations, the First Minister said, and will be enforced if the rules are not followed.

According to the First Minister, more than 20 other pubs and restaurants are involved in the cluster not just the Hawthorn bar.

The Government's official death toll of 46,299 in all settings, including care homes, will be updated later.

Of the deaths in England the patients were aged between 52 and 92 years old and all had known underlying health conditions.

Another three deaths were reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.

Meanwhile holidaymakers have been warned that France 'could lose control of coronavirus any moment'.

The country's top scientific body has warned that the popular holiday destination could lose control of its Covid-19 outbreak "at any moment."

France recorded a 54% rise of Covid-19 cases between 20 and 26 July

Thousands of Brits are set to flock there this summer, with easyJet announcing yesterday that one of its most popular destinations has been Nice in the south of France.

But officials have said that that a second wave of cases is highly likely in a statement published by the Health Ministry’s website.

Describing the situation as "precarious", it notes: "We could at any moment tip into a scenario that is less under control."
