UK coronavirus hospital death toll soars to 25,678 as 464 more patients die

A total of 25,678 patients have now died in hospitals across the UK - an increase of 464.

In England a further 383 people lost their lives in hospital having caught the coronavirus.

Of these, 236 lost their lives in May while 131 died in April and 16 in March.

The Covid-19 deaths in hospital toll now stands at 22,432 in England.

A further 18 people have died in hospitals in Wales, where the Covid-19 death toll now stands at 1,062.

In Northern Ireland four more people have died in hospitals and there have been a further 50 coronavirus infections.

Earlier today, Nicola Sturgeon said 1,762 patients had now died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus, up by 59 from 1,703 on Wednesday.

The First Minister said 12,924 people have now tested positive for the virus in Scotland, up by 215 from 12,709 the day before.

There are 86 people in intensive care in Scotland with coronavirus or coronavirus symptoms, a decrease of three on yesterday, she added.

Dr Robin Howe, from Public Health Wales, said: "With the upcoming May Day Bank Holiday, Public Health Wales reminds the public to continue to adhere to Welsh Government's restrictions on non-essential travel, caravan and campsites, hotels, B&Bs and holiday accommodations, as well as the limited access to our national parks.

"We also remind owners of second homes in Wales to act responsibly and to avoid travelling to these homes until restrictions have been lifted."

Over the past week the number of daily deaths across the UK in and out of hospitals has not followed an obvious trend.

Yesterday 649 people lost their lives to Covid-19, a small decrease compared to the 693 the day before.

Monday and Sunday were hovering either side of the 300 deaths mark however, representing the reporting lag experienced at the weekend.

The daily Covid-19 fatalities are a long way off the peak of the virus however, when more than 1,000 people died on several different days in the middle of April.

While all deaths represent a personal tragedy, the falling death toll has led the Goverment to begin to plan an end to the lockdown.

A document, which was exclusively reported on by the Mirror, has been drawn up to get the country back to normal.

Plans when to reopen sports grounds to the public have been drawn up (PA)

As has been expected for some weeks now, the proposals do not show an immediate return to normal.

Instead parts of the country will be reopened gradually over the coming months, slowly easing the UK back towards something close to how it was before the pandemic began.

The Government's blueprint aims to relax the lockdown in staggered steps between now and October, with an easing on public exercise the first measure to come into force.

It will be followed by the reopening of schools, sports ground and pubs.
