UK coronavirus deaths rocket to 7,862

A further 887 people have died from coronavirus in the UK, bringing the death toll to 7,862.

NHS England has confirmed 765 more people have died in its hospitals, bringing the total number of deaths from 6,483 to 7,248.

Patients were aged between 24 and 103 years old.

Of the 765 patients 43, aged between 33 and 99 years old, had no known underlying health condition.

Their families have been informed.

Scotland saw 81 new deaths, up from 366 to 447, and 392 new cases, bringing the total from 4,465 to 4,857.

Public Health Wales announced 41 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths there to 286 and 16 new cases has been identified, but this was only based on six hours, as they change the way they report.

These numbers are expected to rise back towards more recent levels tomorrow.

The death toll in Northern Ireland has not yet been announced for today.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is still in an intensive care unit in hospital in London, but is said to be improving.

Number 10 said: “The PM had a good night and continues to improve in intensive care at St Thomas’s hospital.

“The PM and No10 are hugely grateful for the support and thank the NHS staff for the brilliant care he is receiving.”
