The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said 22 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus as of 5pm on Saturday, pushing the total number of deaths in the UK to 44,220.
The DHSC also said that in the 24-hour period up to 9am on Sunday, there were 516 positive results. Overall, a total of 285,416 cases have been confirmed.
The government’s figures do not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the country, which are thought to have passed 55,000.
A candlelit vigil was help on Saturday night to remember all those who have died after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK.
Around 50 NHS staff and campaigners took part in the vigil as part of a procession in central London, which started at St Thomas’ Hospital before travelling across Westminster Bridge towards Downing Street.
The new figures come as the NHS celebrates its 72nd anniversary on Sunday after facing its most challenging year in its history due to the coronavirus pandemic.
A round of applause by the public will be held at 5pm to commemorate the efforts of all key workers and volunteers during the pandemic, and a Spitfire with the message ‘Thank U NHS’ painted on its underside will fly over several NHS hospitals in the east of the UK.
The NHS has treated over 100,000 hospital inpatients for coronavirus, including prime minister Boris Johnson, as well as many more who suffered with the virus at home.
