UK coronavirus deaths rise by 209 as thousands more test positive

The UK has now recorded 1,228 coronavirus deaths, according to the government.

The Department of Health tweeted an update on Sunday afternoon showing 19.522 people had tested positive in the UK - up from 17,089 on Saturday.

Of those hospitalised in the UK, 1,228 have died, according to the Department - 209 more than yesterday.

The previous day's update showed an increase in deaths of 260.

It comes as Boris Johnson is writing to every household in the country to reinforce the national lockdown message - and to warn measures could get stricter.

In his letter to 30 million UK households, he says: "We will not hesitate to go further if that is what the scientific and medical advice tells us we must do."

Meanwhile, expert Professor Neil Ferguson of Imperial College warned the country could face months of lockdown.

Prof Ferguson told the Sunday Times: “We are going to have to keep these measures in place, in my view, for a significant period of time - probably until the end of May, maybe even early June. May is optimistic."
