UK coronavirus deaths near 14,000 after another big rise

The total number of people reported to have died from coronavirus in the UK has risen to nearly 14,000.

The latest deaths of those recorded from the different countries of the UK shows the figures have gone up by a further 861.

NHS England has announced that in England specifically, a further 740 people have sadly died after testing positive for Covid-19.

Scotland has today recorded a further 80 deaths, while Wales have registered 32 more deaths and Northern Ireland's total has increased by 18.

It means that the overall UK total has risen to 13,828.

A statement from NHS England said: "Patients were aged between 28 and 103 years old.  40 of the 740 patients (aged between 45 and 93 years old) had no known underlying health condition.

"Their families have been informed."

Sadly, the overall number of deaths linked to this virus will actually be much higher when factoring in those dying at care homes and in communities.

The death figure has risen again after a number of days of lower figures, which experts warned we should not read too much into.

Chief Medical Adviser Chris Whitty said at last night's Downing Street press conference that he expected to see a larger rise today because there was likely to have been a lag in reporting over the long Bank Holiday weekend.

The news comes as the government prepares to speak to the nation again on the issue of the lockdown in the country.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is deputising for the recovering Prime Minister, is expected to announced that the restrictions across the country will remain in place for another three weeks.
