UK coronavirus deaths increase by 55 in the last day

The government said 46,566 people had died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Friday, up by 55 from the previous day.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 56,600 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The government also said that in the 24-hour period up to 9am on Saturday, there had been a further 758 lab-confirmed cases.

Overall, a total of 309,763 positive coronavirus tests have been confirmed, the government said.

Earlier, NHS England said a further 15 people who tested positive for coronavirus had died in hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals to 29,401.

The number of positive tests fell slightly on Saturday compared to Friday's figures (PA)

The patients were aged between 67 and 100 years old and all had known underlying health conditions apart from a 91-year-old patient.

Twelve deaths were reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.

The region with the highest number of deaths was the North East and Yorkshire, which recorded eight deaths.

There were no deaths reported in the North West, where local lockdown measures in place in Greater Manchester and parts of east Lancashire were extended on Friday to include Preston.

On Friday, there were another 871 people who tested positive for coronavirus bringing the UK total number to 309,005, as Saturday's figures represent a significant fall.

The number of daily deaths reported across the UK on Friday had increased by 98 people to 46,511.

Restrictions are in place in Greater Manchester, parts of Lancashire and West Yorkshire, Preston and Blackburn and Leicester to control local spikes in infection rates.
