UK coronavirus deaths increase by 21 as hospital toll reaches 32,836

Coronavirus deaths in the UK's hospitals have jumped by 21 in the past 24 hours.

The hospital death toll now stands at a grim 32,836 across the country, according to figures released today.

There were 20 deaths in England, one in Wales while Scotland and Northern Ireland reported no new deaths.

NHS England said that seven people had died in the Midlands while just one patient died in London.

Scotland has recorded zero new deaths for the sixth time this month, Nicola Sturgeon said earlier today.

Public Health Wales revealed one further person from Covid-19, taking the total number of deaths to 1,478, while the total number of cases there increased by 71 to 15,197.

Northern Ireland's Department of Health said deaths remained at 545 and there was just one new case recorded.

Yesterday it was confirmed that 43 people had died in all settings, a slight increase on the week before.

The totals on Sundays and Mondays tend to be lower due to delays in reporting during the weekends.

Deaths in all setting - including care homes - will be announced at 5pm today.

Hospitals in Scotland, Northern Ireland and London recorded no new deaths on Sunday, as the rate of new infections appeared to plateaued.

The World Health Organisation has announced a record increase in global coronavirus cases, with the total rising by 183,020 in just 24 hours.

The biggest increase was from North and South America with over 116,000 new cases, according to a daily report.

Total global cases are now over 8.7 million with more than 461,000 deaths, according to the WHO.

The previous record for new cases was 181,232 on June 18.

Last week, officials warned the coronavirus pandemic is still accelerating.

"The world is in a new and dangerous phase," Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual briefing from WHO headquarters in Geneva.
