UK coronavirus deaths increase - more than 1,400 people have now died

More than 1,400 people across the UK have died from coronavirus.

The Department of Health said in their latest figures, published on Monday, that the UK death toll now stands at 1,408, which is an increase of 180 from yesterday’s total of 1,228.

In England, the number of people who have died after contracting coronavirus is now 1,284, a rise of 159, NHS England said.

The patients were aged between 32 and 98 years old and all but four, aged between 56 and 87 years old, had underlying health conditions.

134,846 people have been tested, with 112,806 testing negative and the remainder positive.

Today’s update comes as the Prince of Wales, who tested positive for coronavirus last week after developing mild symptoms, is now out of self isolation at his Birkhall home in Scotland.

A Clarence House spokesman said: “Clarence House has confirmed today that, having consulted with his doctor, the Prince of Wales is now out of self-isolation.”

Deputy chief medical officer for England Dr Jenny Harries said the nation will not be in “complete lockdown” for half a year but said social distancing measures will be lifted gradually.

Her warning at Sunday’s coronavirus press conference came as the NHS announced the first confirmed death of a frontline hospital worker with Covid-19.

This week’s figures follow the second biggest day-on-day rise in deaths on Sunday with a jump of 209, and the biggest ever increase since the outbreak began on Saturday with a further 260 deaths.
