UK coronavirus deaths in hospitals surpasses 19,000

The number of people who have died in UK hospitals after contracting coronavirus now stands at 19,506.

The death toll has increased by 684 from 18,738 at the same point yesterday, according to the latest update from the Department of Health.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus has risen by 5,386 to 143,464 from 138,078 at the same point yesterday.

A total of 444,222 people have now been tested, with 28,532 tests taking place yesterday (April 23).

The latest figures come as testing capacity increases to over 50,000 which the government says is "ahead" of its plans to reach 100,000 tests a day by the end of the month.

It has also been announced that all essential workers and their families will be allowed to be tested for coronavirus.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced the latest move for essential workers who are displaying symptoms during the government's daily press conference on the outbreak yesterday.

He said "it's all part of getting Britain back on there feet."

Essential workers will be able to book coronavirus tests online from today (April 24) while companies will also be able to book them for employees.

The whole process will be free and you'll get a text and email for an appointment and results will be sent via text.

There are currently 30 regional drive through testing sites available with more opening each day.
