UK coronavirus deaths rise by 186 to 43,414 - highest daily increase in 10 days

The UK coronavirus death toll in all settings has risen by 186 to 43,414 fatalities - the highest daily increase in 10 days.

The total included a revision in which two deaths had previously been counted twice.

Including deaths from suspected cases of the disease, Britain's toll is over 54,000.

Last Friday, the number of deaths from the previous 24 hour period was 173.

Today's increase is the highest number of deaths in all settings for 10 days after 233 deaths were recorded on  June 16.

Today, it was announced that in all hospital settings, the death toll rose by 70 across the UK in the last 24 hours.

A total 67 more died in England, two in Wales, and one in Northern Ireland, while Scotland recorded no new deaths in the first time on a weekday since lockdown began.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock had warned the government could close beaches after three spots declared incidents yesterday over crowds flouting social distancing rules - but No10 today rowed back on the suggestions - saying they would stay open.

However, Bournemouth beach was a very different picture today than 24 hours ago as the masses finally heeded the warnings to stay away.

Local families and young children had plenty of space to spread out on the sand compared to the chaotic scenes from yesterday when the beach was rammed.

The proportion of Covid-19 patients in hospital who are dying is falling, research suggests.

The University of Oxford's Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine studied deaths in hospital in England and found that the number of people in hospital with coronavirus is reducing by 2.4% every day - halving every 29 days.

The number of deaths is also reducing by 4.3% per day - halving every 16 days.

On April 2, at the height of the epidemic, there were 644 deaths in 10,737 people in hospital with Covid - giving a 6% death rate, the researchers said.

But by June 15, there were 50 deaths and 3,270 people in hospital - giving a death rate of 1.5%.
