UK coronavirus death total passes 35,000 but likely to be higher

The number of people who have died after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK has risen by a further 227.

The figures are made up of 174 new deaths in England, 29 in Scotland and 17 in Wales. Northern Ireland is yet to publish its latest figures.

The UK death toll stood at 34, 796 when updated yesterday, so will rise above the 35,000 mark when the Department of Health produces its full latest numbers.

Reporting its figures, an NHS England statement said: "A further 174 people, who tested positive for the Coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 24,913.

"Patients were aged between seven and 102 years old. Six of the 174 patients (aged between 45 and 90) had no known underlying health condition. "

But Earlier today the Office for National Statistics released new data that indicates the actual death toll from coronavirus in the UK.

There were more than 39,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in England and Wales up to May 8, according to new figures.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) number of 39,071 deaths is 32% larger than the figure announced by government for the same time period.

It means the UK's actual virus death toll in that period was more than 9,000 higher than the official government figure.

The news has confirmed fears that the overall death toll in the country is significantly higher than the one being published by the government.

Today's ONS data also shows the huge and tragic impact that the virus is continuing to have on the nation's care homes.

There were 9,980 deaths related to Covid-19 in care homes in England and Wales up to May 8.

This is referring to those people who died in the homes themselves, the ONS believes this number increases to around 12,500 when including care home residents who died in hospital.
