UK coronavirus death toll up by 11 in lowest daily jump since March

The number of people who have died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus has risen by 11 – the lowest daily rise since before lockdown began.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said 44,830 people had died in the nation's hospitals, care homes and across the wider community after testing positive for the disease as of 5pm on Sunday.

It is the lowest number reported by the DHSC since March 12 – two weeks before Boris Johnson instructed the country to "stay at home".

However, figures tend to be lower on Mondays due to a lag in reporting over the weekend.

The Government's official count does not include all deaths involving Covid-19 in the country, which are thought to have passed 55,000.

The department also confirmed that another 530 people had tested positive for the virus in the 24-hour period up to 9am on Monday.

This takes the total number of cases in the country to date to 290,133.

The UK's individual death tolls now stand as follows:

– England: 40,245

– Scotland: 2,490

– Wales: 1,541

– Northern Ireland: 554

In England, 11 hospital fatalities were confirmed on Monday, bringing the total number of virus deaths among patients to 29,077.

They were aged between 72 and 95 and all had underlying health conditions, Public Health England said.

Wales recorded no new Covid-related fatalities and Scotland saw no new deaths for the fifth day in a row.

Nicola Sturgeon announced the landmark as she praised the nation for "extremely high compliance" with social distancing rules.
