UK coronavirus death toll rises to 61 in increase on last week

A further 61 UK coronavirus deaths have been announced in the past day, a third higher than last week's total.

The deaths are an increase of 21 on last Saturday's figure of 40 deaths.

The latest figure brings the total number of deaths from Covid-19 to 45,738.

This number encompasses deaths with Covid-19 across all settings include care homes and deaths in the community on top of deaths in hospitals which are reported separately.

The number of new coronavirus cases increased by 767 and the UK's total number of confirmed cases is 298,681.

It comes as Merseyside reported no further hospital deaths across the region's hospital trust for the second consecutive Saturday.

However, a further 25 patients died in hospitals across England in the past 24 hours.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus deaths in hospitals in England has now reached 29,272.

The news comes on the day that gyms and other leisure venues have reopen for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown was first imposed.

The Department of Health is yet to confirm today's death figures, as reported by Public Health England, as Health Secretary Matt Hancock has called for an urgent review into how coronavirus death figures are calculated.
