UK coronavirus death toll rises to 45,961 as 83 more lives lost amid second wave warning

The number of coronavirus deaths in the UK has risen by 83 to 45,961 in all settings - amid warnings of a second peak.

It is a decrease on yesterday's daily figure of 119 - but on Monday the number of recorded deaths was just seven.

A further 763 people tested positive for the virus in 24 hours, bringing the overall number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic to 301,455.

It is an increase of more than 200 compared to last week, and yesterday 581 new cases were identified.

The Prime Minister is reportedly anxious about a fresh spike with the number of new infections rising again.

Last Wednesday 79 people died, and the daily increase was 85 two weeks ago - meaning the daily number of deaths has not fallen significantly in July.

The highest Wednesday on record was on April 8, when 938 Covid-19 fatalities were recorded.

Earlier today health authorities announced a further 19 people have died UK hospitals - taking the total hospital death toll to 33,918.

Of these, five were in Wales and 14 were in England.

There were no newly recorded deaths in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

The figure is a 73% rise on the 11 hospital deaths recorded a week ago on Wednesday, July 22.

It comes as worrying data suggests the number of new infections in the UK have noticeably risen again, with a fall in cases now "levelled off".

The number of positive tests each day in England has risen 13% since the start of the month.

Yesterday it was reported that Boris Johnson is reportedly "extremely concerned" that a second wave of coronavirus could hit the UK - within two weeks.

The Prime Minister earlier warned we are seeing "signs of a second wave" of Covid-19 in continental Europe.

A Downing Street source told the Daily Mail: "The PM is extremely concerned by what he's seeing abroad and fears we could be seeing the same thing here in a fortnight.

"People have got to realise we are still in the middle of a pandemic."

This week new measures were put in place following a surge of new cases in Oldham, and soldiers are running mobile testing units in Wrexham amid a serious outbreak.

A month ago there was an outbreak at Rowan Foods plant on the town's industrial estate, The Daily Post reported.

More than 300 people tested positive for the coronavirus at the factory.

Last week it emerged that between 70 and 80 people are fighting Covid-19 at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

That is almost double the number who were being cared for there last week.

In Stone, Staffordshire ten people who visited The Crown and Anchor tested positive for Covid-19.

Visitors and staff who were at the boozer between July 16 and 18 are now being told to self-isolate and urgently get swabs done.

Three Greater Manchester boroughs have had to impose stricter measures to curb the spread of coronavirus as details of outbreaks across the region emerge.

Oldham, Stockport and Trafford have all ramped up measures after spike in the number of people testing positive for Covid-19.
