UK coronavirus death toll rises to 281

The number of people who have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus has hit 281.

The death toll has jumped by 48 in 24 hours.

There are now 5,683 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in the UK - up from 5,018 yesterday.

A statement from the Department of Health said: "As of 9am on 22 March 2020, 78,340 people have been tested in the UK, of which 72,657 were confirmed negative and 5,683 were confirmed positive.

"281 patients in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) have died."

It comes after Wales announced 71 new cases of coronavirus and a further seven deaths.

Northern Ireland today reported its second death, while Scotland's death toll reached 10.

Yesterday, PM Mr Johnson admitted the NHS could well be 'overwhelmed' like the Italian health system in just a fortnight.

He said the UK was just 'two or three' weeks behind Italy, which yesterday recorded almost 800 deaths in just 24 hours.

As a result, up to 1.5 million people in England who face the highest risk of being hospitalised by the coronavirus have been strongly advised they should shield themselves and stay at home.

The advice came as the government warned the coronavirus outbreak is accelerating.
