UK coronavirus death toll rises by nearly 900 in 24 hours

The number of people who have died in hospital in the UK after contracting coronavirus has risen by more than 880 in the past day.

A total of 65,077 people have now tested positive for the virus in the UK, and 7,978 of those hospitalised have sadly died.

The number of deaths has risen by 881 from Wednesday's figure of 7,097, with the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus increasing by nearly 5,000 from 60,733.

Dominic Raab announced the latest figures in his press conference on Thursday.

The government's figures on deaths relate to patients who have died in hospital and does not include deaths in the community, for example in care homes, so the true death toll will be higher.

NHS England has clarified its figures as of the 765 new hospital deaths announced today, 140 occurred on April 8 while 568 took place between April 1 and April 7.

The remaining 57 deaths occurred in March, including two on March 19 and one on March 16.

The latest set of figures are published as Prime Minister Boris Johnson spends his fourth day in intensive care with coronavirus.

Mr Johnson is said to be "in good spirits" and is "responding to treatment," Downing Street said on Wednesday afternoon.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said during yesterday's daily coronavirus briefing that the PM's condition is 'improving' and he is 'sitting up in bed and engaging positively with the clinical team'.
