UK coronavirus death toll rises by almost 900 in 24 hours

The number of people who have died in hospital in the UK after contracting coronavirus has risen by 888.

The death toll in Britain has jumped by to 15,464 in the previous 24 hours - up from 14,576 on Friday.

The Department of Health also said as of 9am 18 April, 460,437 tests have concluded, with 21,389 tests on 17 April.

Of these, 357,023 people have been tested of which 114,217 tested positive. This is up 108,692 from yesterday.

NHS England has announced 784 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 13,918.

Public Health Wales has today announced 28 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities in Wales to 534.

A total of 893 people who tested positive for coronavirus in Scotland have died, a rise of 56 on Friday’s figure, according to the Scottish Government.

While a further 17 people in Northern Ireland have died in hospital settings with coronavirus in the past day, the Public Health Agency said. This brings the total number of confirmed deaths in hospital settings in the region to 193.

Figures published by NHS England show that April 8 currently has the highest total for the most hospital deaths occurring on a single day – 792 – although this could change in future updates.

The total number of deaths released by the Department of Health includes only those who have died in hospital - the death toll does not include deaths in the community for example at home or in care homes.

The Office for National Statistics releases data for all deaths involving Covid-19 on a weekly basis.

It comes as more than 730 people have died in Greater Manchester's hospitals after contracting coronavirus.

The latest NHS England data shows that a further 54 deaths had been recorded at Greater Manchester's hospitals since Thursday, bringing the total number of deaths in our region to 736.

The biggest increase in the last 24 hours was recorded at the Royal Bolton Hospital where 14 more coronavirus patients have died.

Pennine Acute recorded a further nine deaths, Tameside General nine, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust eight and five at Salford Royal.
