UK coronavirus death toll rises by 761 as grim 20,000 total looms

A further 761 people across the UK have died from coronavirus.

The latest updates today show a big spike in deaths from the virus in Wales, with 110 recorded, with a rise of 64 deaths recorded in Scotland.

In its statement today, NHS England said that a further 587 people, who have tested positive for the Coronavirus have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 17,373.

The overall figure for the UK - aside from the updated Northern Ireland Figures which are yet to arrive - now stands at 19,499.

Patients who died in England were aged between 40 and 102 years old.  34 of the 587 patients (aged between 50 and 102 years old) had no known underlying health condition.

These deaths only refer to patients in hospitals - it is thought the overall coronavirus death toll will be much higher when factoring in deaths in the community, particularly those in care homes.

The news comes today as doctors in Warrington believe they may have found a way to improve the prospects of Covid-19 patients in their hospital.

Medics at Warrington Hospital have modified ‘black boxes’ that are generally used to help sleep apnoea patients with their breathing as an alternative to ventilating people battling COVID-19.

A Sky News report heard They say the new approach is less ‘intrusive and invasive’, and leads to a quicker recovery rate.

Consultant Dr Mark Forrest told the news channel: “We watched very closely what was happening in other countries, in particular Italy, and learned from them.

“Like with so many things in life, prevention is better than a cure.

“If we can keep them away from the ventilator then that’s got to be good news, because it’s so difficult to ventilate.”
