UK coronavirus death toll rises by 674 in 24 hours

The number of people who have died in hospital after contracting coronavirus has hit 26,771 today.

The UK death toll is up by 674 from a total of 26,097 recorded on Wednesday according to figures announced by Boris Johnson today.

A total of 6,033 people have tested positive in the last 24 hours, bringing the nation's case total to 171,253, up from 165,221 yesterday.

The number of deaths include those who have died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Wednesday.

There were 81,611 tests were carried out yesterday, the last day before the government's target of testing 100,000 by the end of this week.

NHS England has announced 391 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 20,131.

Public Health Wales said a further 22 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus in Wales, taking the total number of deaths to 908.

A total of 1,475 patients have now died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus, up by 60 from 1,415 on Wednesday.

Yesterday was the first time deaths recorded at care homes as coronavirus were included in the daily figures.

In the first statement since changing the way figures are produced, Public Health England said the total number of deaths was around 17% higher than previous data showed.

The body said it was reporting an additional 3,811 deaths since the start of the outbreak.
