UK coronavirus death toll rises by 66 - as nearly 7,000 new cases confirmed

There have been another 6,968 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK in the last 24 hours, the government has announced.

A further 66 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Friday.

The numbers, accurate as of 9am on Friday, brings the total number of positive cases in the UK to 467,146.

This brings the UK total to 42,268.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been nearly 57,900 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

It comes ahead of new measures introduced at one minute past midnight on Saturday that affect areas including Warrington and Merseyside, and ban households mixing in restaurants, bars, cafes, homes and gardens or outdoor spaces.

Exceptions are in place for people in either childcare or support bubbles.

Anyone who flouts the new rules could face fines starting at £200.

And in the East London borough of Tower Hamlets, residents have been urged to avoid mixing with other households "unless absolutely necessary" after recording one of the highest number of infections in the capital.

One of the world's most high-profile politicians, President Donald Trump, announced overnight that he and First Lady Melania, had tested positive for coronavirus and were self-isolating at the White House.

He was later reportedly only said to be suffering from "mild" symptoms of the virus and intends to carry on working, according to White House officials.

Meanwhile, a survey of universities in the UK revealed that 50 have confirmed cases as thousands of students return to campuses.

Nearly 1,800 Covid-19 cases have been identified among university students and staff, a survey suggests.
