UK coronavirus death toll rises by 66 as almost 7,000 new cases recorded

Almost 7,000 more people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the UK, with a further 66 deaths from the illness.

The Government said that, as of 9am on Friday, there had been a further 6,968 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK. It brings the total number of cases in the UK to 467,146.

The Government also said a further 66 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Friday. This brings the UK total to 42,268.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been nearly 57,900 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

It comes more than 750 students at Northumbria University have tested positive for Covid-19.

A spokesperson for the university said: “As of Friday October 2, we can confirm that we are aware of 770 Northumbria University students who have tested positive for Covid-19, of whom 78 are symptomatic.

“These students are all now self-isolating. Their flatmates and any close contacts are also self-isolating for 14 days in line with government guidance and have been advised to contact NHS119 to book a test as soon as possible should symptoms appear.”
